Alphanumeric Sponsors JDRF Hope Gala

Mar 09, 2010

On April 24, the Triangle/Eastern N.C. Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) will host its seventh annual Hope Gala in Raleigh. Alphanumeric Systems, Inc. will be listed as a Benefactor sponsor, thanks to a contribution from Karen and Harvey Braswell, Alphanumeric’s Owner/CEO and President/COO, respectively.

“As the leaders in the company, we want to be an example to our employees, so that they feel the same way about giving back to the community as we do,” said Karen Braswell.

Since she acquired the company in April 2009, Karen Braswell – who also serves on the JDRF Board of Directors – has solidified Alphanumeric’s focus on corporate citizenship, spearheading a number of company-sponsored charitable events including a holiday fundraiser for the Women’s Center of Wake County and participation in JDRF’s Walks To Cure Diabetes in November, with participants from Alphanumeric’s home office in Raleigh and branch offices in Philadelphia.

JDRF, though, holds a special place in the Braswells’ commitment to philanthropy because of the impact the disease has had upon their family.
The JDRF, founded in 1970, has shown consistent and unflagging support in the fight against diabetes, particularly type 1 diabetes, with $100 million raised annually. The Triangle/Eastern N.C. Chapter, founded in 1996, serves 51 N.C. counties from the Triangle to the coastline. Last year’s Triangle Hope Gala drew more than 400 attendees and raised more than $330,000 for diabetes research through auctions, personal donations and sponsorships.

Working toward that same goal, Alphanumeric’s involvement is, in Karen Braswell’s words, just one more way to make a step toward curing this detrimental disease.

“For over 15 years, it’s been our intent to help JDRF find a cure for diabetes,” said Karen Braswell. “We want to put JDRF out of business because its goal has been met.”

About JDRF
JDRF is the leader in research leading to a cure for type 1 diabetes and its complications in the world.  It sets the global agenda for diabetes research, and is the largest charitable funder and advocate of diabetes science worldwide.
The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research.  Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults suddenly, and can be fatal.  Until a cure is found, people with type 1 diabetes have to test their blood sugar and give themselves insulin injections multiple times or use a pump – each day, every day of their lives.  And even with that intensive care, insulin is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent its eventual and devastating complications, which can include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke and amputation.

Since its founding in 1970 by parents of children with type 1 diabetes, JDRF has awarded more than $1.3 billion to diabetes research, including more than $100 million in 22 countries in FY2009.
