Joel Walls—Alphanumeric Systems, Inc.

Joel is a senior account manager with more than 25 years in the information technology field. For the past 11 years, Joel has worked for Alphanumeric Systems, Inc., a Raleigh-based technology solutions provider that has served the Southeast for more than 27 years. Alphanumeric, a SAS 70 Type II compliant organization, has lines of business in IT Managed Services, Integration and Support Services, Life Cycle Services, and Strategic Sourcing Services.

In his current capacity, Joel is responsible for establishing and maintaining strategic relationships with Alphanumeric clients throughout North Carolina, focusing on the financial sector. In this capacity, he provides strategic and tactical services related to technology readiness reviews to assure compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley, Gramm-Leach-Bliley, and other regulatory legislation. In order to comply, many clients have replaced or revamped their information security systems. Most organizations now view information security as an on-going operation, in need of continuous monitoring, alerting, and reporting.

Joel’s career in the technology arena began as a technician for the U.S. Army, supporting radar systems for nuclear missile systems. After a hiatus as co-owner of a French restaurant, he re-entered the technology field and worked with for several firms in Georgia and South Carolina. One of the major focuses of the firms was the secure operation of document imaging and computer systems for banks and insurance companies. He has consistently focused his energies on IT solutions that address critical business drivers—lowering costs, increasing revenue, and especially, mitigating risk.

Joel is the past president of the RTP chapter Association of Information and Image Management (AIIM) and the past vice president of the RTP chapter Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP). For both groups, he served several years as program chair, recruiting and organizing IT speakers for various meetings and seminars. The topics of many speakers’ presentations focused on the need to balance the needs of making critical information available while maintaining security and privacy.
