New technologies continue to be embraced at remarkable adoption rates. Personal computers, mobile phones, IP Telephony, building systems, WiFi, Power over Ethernet (PoE) devices, and remote business applications are becoming more prevalent as their reliability and ubiquitous nature continues to mature. Individually, each of these technologies is typically underutilized and provides a singular benefit. However, by utilizing a converged infrastructure, these technologies can interoperate to solve unforeseen business challenges.
Forward thinking organizations are achieving the next level of Enterprise Effectiveness by driving system interoperability and convergence onto a single infrastructure platform. This convergence allows the building systems to be considered a true business asset, enabling developers and owners to reduce costs and enhance workplace experiences for their employees and tenants.
There are challenges to creating these dynamic work environments and converged infrastructures.
To achieve Enterprise Effectiveness, the needs and expectations of the new workplace must be defined:
- Financial benefits for owners/developers
- Employee safety and security
- Workplace mobility
- Increased productivity
- Portals into multiple converged systems
- Green/energy efficient workplace
Due to the complexity of converging several disparate networks onto a common infrastructure, it is imperative that the diverse vendor community work together to provide interoperable and scalable solutions.
Value Solutions
- Surveillance Systems: Alphanumeric offers solutions that provide the most effective, future-proof video detection and delivery solutions available, from enterprise to small-business scale. These solutions provide instant access to events and offer automated delivery and display of events and exceptions. Incorporating motion detection and motion smart search, automated push-video of live events, and through integration with access control and Video Content Analytics, enhanced site security is within reach.
- Digital Signage: Digital Signage Systems enable organizations to create, manage, and access compelling digital media to easily connect customers, employees, partners, or students-anywhere, anytime. Using flexible and comprehensive solutions, publishing dynamic content to both on and off premise digital signage displays, using the power of the IP network, delivers live and on-demand content to enable organizational awareness.
- Secure Visitor Management Systems: With solutions from
Alphanumeric, visitors electronically scan their ID (business card or driver’s license), and all relevant information about them is captured in a secure database file, including their photo and signature (optional), the name of the person being visited, the reason for the visit, and their entry and exit times. In twenty seconds or less, the person is professionally checked in and a high quality visitor badge is automatically printed.
- Physical Layer Management: Structured cabling is the foundation of a network and patch fields are the heart of the structured cabling system. A single patch cord disconnection can bring down critical segments of the network, create a breach in network security, or decrease the efficiency of the network exponentially. With active scanning hardware, managed patch panels, and comprehensive software, the physical layer management solution provides real-time monitoring of patch field connectivity and provides the benefits of enhanced network reliability, improved security, and greater efficiency in managing networks.
- Broadband/Internet: Today’s networks not only need to efficiently and securely transmit bandwidth-intensive data, voice, video, and wireless applications, they also need to provide for evolving traffic patterns, new services, and optimized application performance. Alphanumeric can insure that connectivity between devices, users, buildings, and sites is safe and scalable to handle the Integrated Building Automation traffic.
- Radio Frequency Identification (RFID): Solutions from Alphanumeric and its partners use a standard Wi-Fi
wireless network to accurately locate and identify any asset or person, and utilize that location to deliver direct business benefits with a fast return on investment. System designs can includes indoor and outdoor real-time asset location (RTLS), long range Active RFID, choke-point visibility and telemetry, enabling clients in numerous industries to drive revenues and cut costs.

Return on Investment: Total Integrated Building Automation will save on operating costs for energy for years to come; with the prospect of peak period electricity prices rising steadily, it just makes good sense to design the most energy-efficient building possible. Many green buildings are designed to use 25% to 40% less energy than required by current codes; some buildings even achieve higher levels of efficiency. Translated to a normal operating cost of $1.60 to $2.50 per sq.ft. for electricity (the most common “fuel” for buildings), this means a reduction of $0.40 to $1.00 per per sq. ft. per year in utility operating costs. Often these savings are achieved for an incremental investment of about $1.00 to $3.00 per sq.ft. With building costs ranging upwards of $100 to $150 per sq.ft, it makes good sense to invest 1% to 2% of capital cost to secure long-term operating cost savings, particularly those with “paybacks” less than three years.
Through the innovative efforts of companies like Alphanumeric, Panduit, GridLogix, and Cisco, some of the most fundamental and critical elements of the next generation converged networks are being deployed today.
