With the news of the global outbreak of WannaCry ransomware, we felt it was vital to provide assurance to all Alphanumeric customers that our systems, and those of our managed services customers are protected against the identified Windows vulnerability.
All of the systems we manage are patched regularly through normal managed service activities. The only exceptions to this are the few remaining servers running software beyond end of life. No patches for end of life systems have been available until now. Microsoft has made a special exception because of the virus outbreak to provide patches to those end of life machines. We are in the process installing those updates now.
We have sent communications directly to our managed services clients regarding the outbreak and our response to it. We will also be communicating to any that are running older systems regarding the recently released emergency patches and their options for implementing them, or upgrading. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and advise our customers as to the best courses of action to meet their needs.
Our team has been following the news of this outbreak, and it seems only to underscore the importance of proactive IT management, regular patching and upgrading, and diligent cyber security protocols. As a CIO myself, I understand the difficult balance of cost and protections, but I am confident that, unfortunately, this will not be the last time we hear of a major virus outbreak. I would advise any organization to invest in their systems to ensure the best possible security; the cost of a breach can far outweigh the investment in maintaining a stable IT environment.
If you have any questions about how to define the appropriate solution for your organization, please do not hesitate to contact us. We offer many tailored solutions for IT managed services, proactive patching and remediation, cyber security training, and other methods of protecting your data against malicious intrusions.
